Learn Circular Netting Stitch and Make a Beaded Easter Egg

Spring is finally just around the corner, and these Netted Easter Eggs are the perfect project to get in the spirit!

This technique was born (get it) from a similar project covering a holiday ornament that you can find instructions for here and here. Starting with a simple 6 pointed star, I increased each netted row by one bead until I reached the largest part of the egg. I stayed with that count until the egg started to get smaller, then decreased as necessary. There was a little trial and error involved, but not as much as you might think! Play around with your counts if you find a different size egg to bead around.

Find the printable instructions (and lots more!) for the original Goose Sized egg free here in the Beadalon Learning Center. I included two alternative row counts for a medium and small egg, too. You can also watch the class that I taught for the Michaels Community Classroom and follow along.

Materials
• Beadalon® WildFire™ Bead Weaving Thread, 008”
• Wood Goose Egg by ArtMinds® painted with white craft paint
• John Bead White Superduos and Size 8 Seed Beads in Pink Chalk, Opaque Lemon Yellow, and Purple Chalk

Tools
• Scissors and/or Thread Burner
• Beadalon® Jewel Loom Needle

Instructions:
STEP 1
Cut a 6 foot (1.8 m) length of .008 WildFire. You will need to add another 6 foot length about half way through the project.
ROUND 1 –(Yellow) Pick up one size 8 seed bead and one Superduo 6 times. Leave about a 3 inch (7.6 cm) tail and pass through all of the beads again to form a circle. Tie the ends in a square knot and trim the tail. Thread through the circle to exit a Superduo. Your thread will be exiting the bottom of the Superduo. Thread back through the same SuperDuo so your thread is exiting the top.
ROUND 2 - (Yellow) Pick up two size 8 seed bead, one SuperDuo, and two seed beads. Go through the empty hole on the next SuperDuo. Repeat around the circle. When you get to the end, you’ll need to “step up” after going through the last SuperDuo by threading through the first two seed beads and SuperDuo added. Get your thread in position for the next round by passing around and through the top of the SuperDuo.
ROUND 3 - (Yellow) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 3 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 3 seed beads.
ROUND 4 - (Purple) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 4 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 4 seed beads.
ROUND 5 - (Purple) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 5 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 5 seed beads.
ROUND 6 - (Purple) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 6 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 6 seed beads.
ROUND 7 - (Pink) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 7 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 7 seed beads.
ROUND 8 and ROUND 9 - (Pink) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 8 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 8 seed beads.
ROUND 10 and ROUND 11 - (Purple) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 8 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 8 seed beads.
ROUND 12 - (Purple) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 7 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 7 seed beads.
ROUND 13 - (Yellow) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 6 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 6 seed beads.
ROUND 13 - (Yellow) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 5 seed beads, one SuperDuo and 5 seed beads.
ROUND 14 - (Yellow) Repeat Round 2 but pick up 7 seed beads. Pass through all of the beads in Round 14 again, make sure everything is pulled tight and tie off the thread.
